Google's Agent Vision Has a 50:1 Problem

Google recently published its AI Agent Trends 2026 report, and the ambition is hard to ignore.
The 49-page document lays out a future where AI agents transform every layer of the enterprise. Marketing managers orchestrate teams of specialized agents handling data analysis, competitor monitoring, content creation, and campaign reporting. "Digital assembly lines" run procurement, compliance, and customer service end-to-end through new protocols that let agents communicate with each other across organizational boundaries. Agentic concierges don't wait for customer complaints; they monitor backend systems, detect issues proactively, and resolve problems before customers even notice.
The framing throughout is ambitious. Oliver Parker, Google Cloud's VP for Generative AI, puts it directly: "AI agents are the leap from being an 'add-on' approach to being an 'AI-first' process. It's a fundamental change in workflow, a new way to work that will require a profound shift in mindset and corporate culture."
Saurabh Tiwary, VP and General Manager of Cloud AI, goes further: "By 2026, agents will manage complex, multi-step workflows across systems. A key responsibility of employees will be to set the strategy and oversee the system of agents responsible for tasks, such as invoicing and contracting."
I don't doubt any of this. The productivity potential is real, the adoption pressure is real, and the technology is maturing faster than most enterprises can absorb. Google's report captures something genuine about where work is heading.
Google's job is to paint that vision. Our job, as security practitioners, is to ask what it takes to secure it.
Reading Between the Lines
The report organizes its vision around five trends: agents for every employee, agents for every workflow, agents for your customers, agents for security, and agents for scale. Each section details transformation potential. Read through a security lens, each section also reveals a common requirement: every agent needs credentials to operate.

Consider the marketing manager scenario Google describes in detail. The employee orchestrates five specialized agents: a data agent sifting through market trends, an analyst agent monitoring competitors, a content agent drafting copy, a creative agent generating visuals, and a reporting agent pulling campaign analytics. That setup delivers real productivity gains. It also requires API keys for analytics platforms, OAuth tokens for social media services, service account permissions for content management systems, and access credentials for whatever creative and reporting tools the agents connect to. Five agents means five sets of non-human identities that need to be provisioned, stored, monitored, and eventually rotated or decommissioned.
Scale that across every employee Google envisions as an "agent orchestrator" and the credential sprawl becomes significant.
The report introduces two protocols as enablers for this vision. Agent2Agent (A2A) allows agents from different vendors and organizations to work together seamlessly. Model Context Protocol (MCP) creates standardized connections between AI models and enterprise data sources like databases, cloud platforms, and internal systems. Google frames both as solutions for interoperability and grounding agents in real enterprise context. That framing is accurate.
It's also worth noting what these protocols mean for security teams. A2A enables agents from one organization to interact with agents from another, which raises questions about credential sharing, permission delegation, and accountability when something goes wrong. MCP gives agents direct access to production databases, internal APIs, and sensitive systems, authenticated by credentials that need to exist somewhere and be managed by someone.
These protocols are plumbing for the agentic future. They're also new trust boundaries that security teams will need to map and monitor.
The 50:1 Reality
Google's report notes that 52% of executives already have agents in production. The deployment is well underway.
Here's the context that security leaders should layer onto that statistic: in most enterprises, non-human identities already outnumber human identities by a ratio of roughly 50 to 1. API keys, service accounts, OAuth tokens, certificates, and secrets have proliferated across cloud platforms, SaaS applications, CI/CD pipelines, and development environments for years. Most security teams lack complete inventory of what exists, who owns each identity, what permissions have been granted, and what constitutes normal usage patterns.
Agentic AI builds directly on top of this reality.

Every agent Google describes will create new non-human identities, request access to existing ones, and interact with enterprise systems through credential-based authentication. The 50:1 ratio won't grow incrementally. It will accelerate, with identities that are harder to attribute to human owners, easier to overprovision because agents need broad access to be useful, and more likely to end up stored in configurations that exist outside traditional security visibility.
What the Report Signals
The document includes a section called "Agents for Security" that discusses using AI agents to improve SOC operations. The vision involves agents that triage alerts, assist with threat hunting, analyze malware, and help with detection engineering. Francis deSouza, Google Cloud's COO and President of Security Products, frames it well: "AI agents will transform complex, multi-step processes like procurement, security operations and customer support, shifting the human roles to focus on high-value, strategic orchestration across the business."
That's a valuable application of agentic AI. Security teams are overwhelmed, and agents that help analysts work faster address a real operational problem.

The report is a trends document, not a security whitepaper, so it's not surprising that it focuses on capabilities rather than risks. But for CISOs reading it, the signal is clear: this level of agentic adoption is coming, and it will create security challenges at a scale most organizations haven't planned for.
Using agents to improve security operations is one part of the equation. Securing the agents themselves, managing the identities they create, and governing the credentials they consume is another part entirely. Both will need investment.
The Questions That Matter
None of this argues against adopting agents. The productivity potential is genuine, and organizations that ignore agentic AI will fall behind competitors who embrace it. The business pressure is real. Your board has probably already encountered this report or others like it.
The implication is that security needs to evolve alongside adoption, not chase it afterward.
Before your organization scales its next agentic workflow, your security team should be able to answer fundamental questions:
- How many agent-related identities exist in your environment today?
- Who owns each one, and how is ownership tracked when employees leave or change roles?
- What can each identity access, and does that access follow least-privilege principles?
- Where are credentials stored, and are those storage locations monitored?
- What does normal behavior look like for each identity, and would you detect anomalous usage?

If those questions don't have clear answers now, they won't become easier as agentic adoption accelerates through 2026.
Looking Ahead

Google's report is a useful signal of what's coming. The vision is credible, the timeline is aggressive, and the enterprise appetite is clearly there. For security leaders, the task now is translating that vision into a security roadmap that keeps pace with it.
The 50:1 ratio is already a challenge. What comes next will determine whether organizations get ahead of this cycle or find themselves, once again, catching up.
